We Value Working toward Exhibiting the Kingdom of God - 11/20/2011
Before we get to Isaiah's vision of a new kingdom, we need to go back to the garden of Eden. Picture a garden, a healthy, fertile garden. In the spring there's asparagus, in the summer there are tomatoes, in autumn - apples. The winter – well, cabbage. Maybe the garden has walkways of butterfly bushes and a pond with fish and frogs.

We Value Spiritual Growth - 11/6/2011
Our text said blessed are those – Some translations say happy are those – Content is actual more true to the Hebrew meaning. Contented are those – who delight themselves in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.

We Value the Third Person of the Trinity - 10/23/2011
Jesus is at the river Jordan – dozens of people watching him get baptized, just as he comes out of the water, there's some noise from the heavens. One of the gospels says it sounded like thunder. We Value Laughter - 10/9/2011

When you make bread dough, the punching down and the kneading is what makes the gluten strands. Gluten strands holds bread together, gives it shape and promotes elasticity. Yesterday would've been Jim Henson's 75th birthday. Jim Henson, a puppeteer, director and producer was best known for creating the Muppets. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear, Gonzo, Beeker, the Swedish Chef... In his eulogy, his son said that "if you asked him how a movie would turn out, he’d say, "It’ll be what this group can make, and if you changed any one of us, it would be a different movie.”

Occasionally Pete will ask me – if church wasn't your job, what would we do Sunday mornings? My first answer is always this – We'd sit on the couch at the First Church of the NY Times where the coffee time is during service.

Unity - At What Cost? 02/27/2011
Get ready for a very long narrative... If it's not offensive to you, you may choose to play the Soprano's soundtrack in the background. This is the overall narrative of 2 Samuel - the entire book. There are large narratives left out of this telling only because we have already covered them previously.

Afraid of My Own Shadow 02/20/2011
We're in week 7 of "David,” - I asked the rabbi at the Jewish temple why Moses is a more prominent figure in Judaism than David. His answer was that David is the future – Moses is the past. David is the Messiah figure.

O Lord Won't You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz 02/13/2011
As way of getting us on the same page – the Bible is not a history book. It is a story book. These stories are written and told by people who are making sense of their relationship with God. It is a human telling of the history of the sacred – and it is authoritative to us as those who believe.
